An investigation on the situation of the 5th grade students in the secondary school

This study was carried out with the aim of examining the meaning and type of students' vocabulary based on the renewed Turkish Lesson Curriculum of Turkish teachers, secondary school students, to identify and understand the opinions of teachers and students. The study group of the research is 160 fifth grade students who study at 4 secondary schools in Gaziantep province in the quantitative in 2018-2019 academic year; It consists of 20 Turkish teachers who answer the open-ended question in a qualitative dimension. In the research, embedded pattern was used to support mixed method and quantitative data. Quantitative data were obtained through a measurement tool developed by the researcher, and qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. SPSS 22.0 package program and Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis Test were used to analyze quantitative data. Teacher and student interviews were recorded and subjected to content analysis, and the opinions were categorized under top and bottom themes. As a result, the rate of students finding the meaning type of the vocabulary elements in the measurement tool is 74.8%; The rate of finding meaning was determined as 61.2%. It has been determined that female students are more successful in determining the meaning and type of vocabulary elements. It has been determined that the situation of private school students in finding the meaning of vocabulary is better than public school students. It was observed that students were more successful in determining the meaning type of vocabulary than finding the meaning. The results of the research include the blending of qualitative and quantitative data that reflect the opinions of teachers and students under the themes specified, and these findings provide clues about the opinions and practices of Turkish teachers regarding vocabulary teaching.
