Noun-to-noun formation suffixes in Uzbek Turkish

This study examines the nominal derivational affixes used in Oʻzbek Turkish, a member of the Karluk branch of the Turkic language family, and their derivational power and functions. The focus of this study is on affixes other than those used for word formation, changing word types, expanding meanings, and enabling syntactic structure, which are specifically considered as nominal derivational affixes. The study lists all the affixes identified as nominal derivational affixes in grammar studies of Oʻzbek Turkish; it also identifies and classifies all derived nouns that are included in one of the most comprehensive dictionaries of Oʻzbek Turkish, the Oʻzbek Tilining İzo'hli Lug'ati. Thus, the functionality of these affixes is concretized with quantitative values. Nominal derivational affixes are evaluated under two headings: Turkish and foreign affixes, with each affix's function illustrated with example sentences. The historical context of these affixes, examined synchronously, is also addressed. Affixes used in Oʻzbek Turkish but not in Turkish Turkish, as well as any functions not present in Turkish Turkish, are noted under the relevant heading. At the end of the study, a classified list of derived nouns based on the nominal derivational affixes they have taken and a dictionary of these nouns are also provided. The aim of this study is to identify the similarities and differences in structures and usages between Oʻzbek Turkish and Turkish Turkish by determining the nominal derivational affixes and their functions in Oʻzbek Turkish.
