Examining the mediating role of self-objectification in the relationship between selfie-editing behavior and body satisfaction

In the current study, it is aimed to examine the role of self-objectification in the relationship between photo-editing behavior and body satisfaction. The study group of the research consists of 388 female participants between the ages of 18-65 who made photo editing. The research data were obtained online and face-to-face after obtaining permission from the Beykoz University Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Board. Sociodemographic Information Form is used to learn the information if the participants such as age and social media use. The Body Appreciation Scale is used to measure body satisfaction levels, the Photo Editing Scale is used to measure selfie editing behaviors, and the Self-Objectification Beliefs and Behaviors Scale is used to measure self objectification levels. As a result of the correlation analyses; a very weak, negative and statistically significant relationship between selfie editing behavior and body satisfaction, a moderate, positive and statistically significant relationship between selfie editing behavior and self-objectification, a moderate, negative and statistically significant relationship relationship between self-objectification and body satisfaction is found. As a result of the mediation analysis, it is found that self-objectification plays a full tool role in the relationship between photo editing and body satisfaction. The research results draw attention to the relationship of selfie editing behavior with body satisfaction and self objectification and support Objectification Theory.
