Investigation of the social-emotional well-being and psychological health of pre-school children experienced with the pandemic and earthquake process

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine social-emotional well-being and psychological substantiality of pre-school children who experienced pandemia and earthquake period. Group of this study using mixed research modal is consist of 73 chidren studying at 2 independent pre-school and 1 nursery class (Private Teaching Institution) affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in the center of Elazığ. Quantitative data of the study is obtained from "Child Personal Information Form'' and "Social-Emotional Well-Being and Psychological Substantiality Scale'' (PERİK). In addition, SPSS 22.0 Programme is used for data analyse. Children are categorized as high and low levels by the help of sub-dimension of the scale. As a result of the analyse; while it is determined that there is a meaningful difference in gender, mothers' educational background and profession variables, there is no meaningful difference in number of siblings, fathers' educational background and profession. Qualitative data of the study is obtained from "children's pictures'' and "semistructured Interview''. Also, MAXQDA 22 programme is used in the content analyse. As a result of the analyse; pandemia and perception for earthquake, interpretation of senses and experience are determined as common subtheme. It is seen that children make negative describings for pandemia and marginal describings for earthquake; while they can take social precautions for pandemia, they need help for the hygiene precautions. Also, it is concluded that families' behaviors are important for the protection ways from earthquake and children use social media as an information resource and influenced from it. In addition, it is seen that children state and make pictures of negative emotion and reasons of negative emotion for themselves and others during the earthquake period. On the other hand, they state and make pictures of negative emotions with positive reasons during the pandemia period. Consequently, it is determined that the reasons why their overcoming skills are better in pandemia period is the effect of experince.
