Abstract (EN)
Polymer composites are materials that contain at least one type of filler and one type of polymer matrix. Since they are functional materials they can be used for various applications from construction to aviation technology. The type of filler is important to determine the ultimate function of the composite. Polymer composites are promising materials due to their lightweight structure, thermal, dimensional, electrical and mechanical properties. In addition, cost reduction, which we frequently encounter in polymer composites, can be given as an important contribution of these structures. Another advantage of the polymer composites can be given as their tunability. Fillers added to the polymer matrix at different ratios cause the composite to exhibit different properties. Although various fillers can be used in the preparation of polymer composites, recent environmental constraints have led industry and academia to investigate mineral-filled composites. Since minerals are natural materials extracted from the ground, there is less damage to the environment until they are ready for use. Perlite is a natural mineral that can be used as a filler for polymer composites due to its lightweight structure, low thermal conductivity and high thermal stability. It is usually used in expanded form. Perlite is exposed to high temperatures to remove water from its structure and after expansion, it is subjected to crushing, drying, grinding, screening and sizing processes in the plant. Its performance depends on its composition and morphology. Therefore, perlite is classified according to its content, size and color. It is used for various applications from food to construction and agriculture to polymer industry. Although there are limited studies on perlite-filled polymer composites, recent ecological constraints and precautions have led the industry to use natural mineral fillers such as perlite. Perlite-filled polymer composites have been prepared in different forms using low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, etc. and have been reported to improve mechanical properties, thermal stability and sound insulation performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the production and some properties of poly[styrene-b(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene] (SEBS), composites prepared by using perlite material, which is a natural mineral filler with high abundance in Turkey. In this context, perlite filled SEBS composites were prepared and morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated.
