TITLE: PLASMA ASYMMETRIC DIMETHYLARGININE LEVELS INPATIENTS WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROMEAUTHOR: Dr. M NE YAVUZ TAŞLIPINARSUMMARYPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder affecting a large womenpopulation. Because of its relation with metabolic syndrome, and increased risks formetabolic and cardiovascular diseases, diagnosis and treatment of PCOS is an importantproblem.These risks can be prevented at early periods, thus morbidity and mortality rates can belowered. Therefore new studies are required about this subject. We aimed to study plasmaADMA levels which may be used as a cardiovascular risk marker in future, in patients withPCOS.We found that plasma ADMA levels were significantly higher in PCOS patients than inthe controls who were matched same age and weight with patients.Serum NO levels were significantly lower in patients than in the controls.HOMA rates which are accepted as an insulin resistance parameter, were significantlyhigher in patients than in the controls.There were not significant difference between BMI of PCOS patients and BMI of thecontrols. And none of the groups showed dyslipidemia, hypertension, glucose intoleranceand/or diabetes mellitus. Therefore we consider that our results are moderately reliable.Finally our study which showed higher plasma ADMA levels in PCOS patients may be apreliminary study for new investigations about ADMA levels and functions.
