Evaluation of treatment adaptation of the patients diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract (EN)

This study has been performed as descriptive in order to evaluate the treatment adaptation of the patients diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. 108 patients diagnosed with polycycstic ovary syndrome who applied to the obstetrics and gynacology department of a private healthcare facility between the dates 01th of October, 2013 – 01th of May, 2014 were included in the scope of this study. Data of the study was required after ethical approval was taken and interviews were performed. The average age of the participants is 30,4 ± 6,8 (18-45), the average BMI (kg/ m2) is 25,4 ± 4,2 (18,7-37,7). The average age of the first menstruation of the participants is 13,2 ± 1,5 (10-16), the average age when they were diagnosed with PCOS is 22,81. In this study, 57,9% of the patients (62 participants) stated that they were recommended exercise and 51,6% of the patients who were recommended exercise (32 participants) stated that they did not perform exercise. 38,7% of the patients (24 participants) who were recommended exercise stated that they were not given an exercise program which was specific for them. 54,2% of the patients ( 58 participants) stated that they were recommended diet program in their treatment, 44,8% of the patients (26 participants) who were recommended diet program stated that they did not perform diet. 36,2 of the patients (21 participants) stated that they were not recommended diet program which was specific for them. 95,8% of the patients (69 participants) who were recommended 1 medicine per day in their treatment stated that they used the medicine, 3,6% of the patients (3 participants) stated that they did not use any medicine. In conclusion, the patients do not adapt the medication, exercise and diet treatments. It is also found out that there are patients who are not recommended exercise and diet program specific to individual. It is recommended to inform the patient about the importance of performing the combined treatment together and to follow up and evaluate them and it is also recommended to give consultancy service about presenting the exercise and diet recommendation as program with the guidance of related specialities and about its importance.
