Abstract (EN)
The conversion of popular culture, which has become an integral part of everyday life, into mass culture, leads to a decrease in the habit of reading and thus causes the meaning production of the public to be lost. The study of the popular culture levels of the public in relation to reading helps to understand the meaning of the individual in today's modern society. Popular culture as a concept expresses the cultural merits adopted by the public. Nowadays, these delights are shaped by the easy fulfillment of the pleasures and wishes. The public forms the popular culture by preferring that is only consuming, culture content produced for them. Popular culture contents are distributed via mass media and individuals read these texts in written and audiovisual manner. Reading, literally is as the interaction process with the book, the communication between the reader and the text. The reader's ability to understand the text and asses it effectively requires a mental skill. As a result of individual's being passivated by the popular culture, the reading skills are also affected. The fact that the individual can read the popular texts offered to him in an effective manner, rather than in a passive way, causes the society and popular culture to be questioned. For this reason, there is an interaction between societies' influence from popular culture and their reading habits. In this study, students' attitudes towards popular culture are compared with their attitudes towards reading. This comparison is based on the assumption that those who develop positive attitudes towards the popular culture will have negative attitudes towards reading.attitudes towards the popular culture would have negative attitudes towards reading.
