Abstract (EN)

This study examines the fundamental elements of Turkish mythology and the relationships between ancient Turkish religion and Shamanism. By particularly addressing the contributions and interpretations of Prof. Dr. Saadettin Yağmur Gömeç in this field, it reveals that the ancient Turkish religion of Gök Tengri belief and Shamanism are distinct yet, in some aspects, compatible belief systems. The ancient Turkish religion is a monotheistic belief system based on Gök Tengri. Gök Tengri was regarded as the creator of the sky, the earth, and humans, and this belief is clearly expressed in written texts from the Göktürk and Uighur periods, as well as in foreign sources. The Gök Tengri belief also shaped the social structure and worldview of Turkish societies. On the other hand, Shamanism is a belief system more intertwined with nature, based on nature spirits and various deities. Shamanism was practiced through shamans, who communicated with spirits and conducted societal rituals. Shamans connected with nature spirits to heal illnesses, protect the community, and attempt to control natural events. The similarities between the ancient Turkish religion and Shamanism have led to the conflation of these two belief systems over time. Both systems have a profound connection with nature and the sky, exerting a strong influence on rituals and societal norms. However, while the Gök Tengri belief is more monotheistic, Shamanism is a polytheistic belief system based on nature spirits. The studies of Prof. Dr. Saadettin Yağmur Gömeç examine the differences and similarities between these two belief systems in detail, playing a significant role in the understanding of Turkish mythology. Gömeç emphasizes that the ancient Turkish religion is the Gök Tengri belief and should not be confused with Shamanism. However, he also notes that Shamanism holds an important place among Siberian Turks, particularly in its role in transmitting oral literature in the face of various assimilation policies. The findings of this study significantly contribute to our understanding of the rich and multifaceted structure of Turkish mythology. The ways in which the ancient Turkish religion and Shamanism have shaped the belief systems, values, and worldviews of Turkish societies are examined through the similarities and differences between these two belief systems. Prof. Dr. Saadettin Yağmur Gömeç's analyses reveal the historical, cultural, and social contexts of Turkish mythology and expand the body of knowledge in this field. In conclusion, this study provides an important perspective on the similarities and differences between the ancient Turkish religion of Gök Tengri belief and Shamanism, contributing to the understanding of Turkish mythology. The works of Prof. Dr. Saadettin Yağmur Gömeç serve as a valuable resource for a deeper examination of mythological narratives and the appreciation of the rich heritage of Turkish culture.
