Abstract (EN)
Psoriasis is a common, chronic, inflammatory and hyperproliferative skin disease. It?s well known that infection agents act role on the exacerbation and triggering of the disease. Periodontal diseases are the chronic inflammatory diseases of dental gum and the tissues surrounding the teeth due to the microorganisms placed on dental plaques. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relation between periodontal diseases that compose chronic infection focus and psoriasis.76 patients that admitted to Inonu University Medical Faculty Dermatology Polyclinic and diagnosed with psoriasis and a control group of 76 patients with similar age, gender and without ant systemic disease were involved in the study. The examinations of the patients were performed by using periodontal probe according to the CPITN index system that was developed by World Health Organization.A statistically significant difference was found between the patients with psoriasis and control group about odontal score, oral hygiene, frequency of tooth brushing and dental floss use (p=0.01, p=0.001, p=0.01, p=0.05 respectively). A difference between the severity of psoriasis and severity of odontal disease was detected but a statistically significance was not detected (p=0.204).As a result, a correlation between psoriasis and periodontal diseases was detected while there was not a relation between the severity of psoriasis and the severity of periodontal disease in our study. We think that periodontal diseases can affect psoriasis through chronic infection focuses and probably the proinflammatory cytokines. Further studies on larger series would be useful in order to understand the exact role of periodontal diseases on psoriasis.
