Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted to examine the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on respiratory functions and athletic performance in recreational volleyball players. A pre-test–post-test experimental research design was applied; the study was designed as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and crossover trial. A total of 16 volunteer athletes were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n=8) or the control group (n=8). While the control group continued only their regular volleyball training, the experimental group additionally performed inspiratory muscle training using a respiratory exercise device (Triflow) for eight weeks, five days per week, twice a day. During the data collection process, participants underwent measurements of body mass index, pulmonary function test, the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1), and an 800-meter time-trial run. Pulmonary function tests were performed using a spirometer at Bingöl State Hospital. All measurements were taken for both groups at the beginning and at the end of the training period. The findings indicated that IMT in the experimental group led to significant improvements in respiratory function parameters. Moreover, significant enhancements were observed in Yo-Yo IR1 and 800-meter run performances in the experimental group, whereas the control group did not exhibit similar improvements. In conclusion, inspiratory muscle training was found to be effective in improving both respiratory capacity and performance in recreational volleyball players. These findings suggest that incorporating IMT into training programs may be beneficial for athletes in terms of both performance and respiratory health.
