Abstract (EN)

Aim: To evaluate the clinical and demographic characteristics of Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) patients. Materials-Methods: 92 eyes of 46 patients who were admitted to Afyon Kocatepe University Medical Faculty Ophthalmology outpatient clinic with a diagnosis of RP greater than 18 years old and 92 eyes of 46 healthy persons with similar age and gender were included. The presence of cataract in the anterior segment examinations was evaluated in detail in terms of both groups. After detailed ophthalmologic examination, measurements of central macula, central cornea and retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses were performed. In all cases macular and optical discs were segmented. The relationship between the macular thicknesses and retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses was evaluated and compared with the control group. Patients were divided into three groups: mild, medium and severe according to the visual acuity, optical discolor pitch and bone spicule ratio. Results: 43.5% of the patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa were female and 56.5% were male. Of the control group, 47.8% were female and 52.2% were male. The mean age of the patient group was 35.5 ± 11.6 years and the mean age of the control group was 39.1 ± 14.4 years. All of the cases consisted of the cases which were applied from Afyonkarahisar headquarters and districts and the surrounding provinces. Right and left eye cataract rate of Retinitis Pigmentosa patients was evaluated as 28.3%. Most of the cases with cataract were posterior subcapsular cataract type. The macula evaluated after separation into segments was found to be significantly thinner in all quadrants except the right and left nasal and right peripheral nasal quadrants. When the patient and control group were compared in terms of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, there was a significant difference between nasal, nasal superior (Mann Whitney U test, p=0,024) and temporal (Mann Whitney U test, p=0.000) quadrants of both eyes. When the retinitis pigmentosa patient group and control group were compared; In the RP case group, CCT was found to be significantly lower in both the right and left eyes (Mann Whitney U test, p=0,00). A significant correlation between intraocular pressures and only CCT was detected, Spearman Correlation test for left eye, p = 0.004). In cases with Retinitis Pigmentosa, the right and left eye EDGK's of all patients were compared with the findings of bone spicule density and optical dyskin wrinkles, which are typical findings of the fundus examination of this disease, and a significant correlation was detected between them. In the patient group, central macular thickness (SMC) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses were not statistically significant when evaluated in relation to EDGK. Conclusion: The prevalence of cataract in patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa is most frequently seen with increasing PSC as the age of the patients increases. When the patient was divided into macular segments and evaluated, it was found to be significantly lower than healthy cases. The thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer was also significantly different in the nasal, nasal superior and temporal quadrants compared to the healthy subjects in the patients. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was significantly lower in patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa. In Retinitis Pigmentosa patients, the visual acuity was significantly lower and changed with RP findings.
