Abstract (EN)

As a result of increase in energy demand and population, renewable energy is being utilized around the world especially hybrid renewable system because it utilizes the strength of one energy sources to balance the weakness of the other making the system reliable, less costly and polluting, but the hybrid system should be optimally sized to make it economically attractive. Therefore, the objective of the thesis is to determine the technical and economic evaluation as well as environmental impact of a standalone and grid interactive hybrid renewable energy system to supply electricity to an Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department in Eskişehir Technical University. Hybrid optimization model for multiple energy resources (HOMER) pro software was preferred to achieve the optimal configuration of the standalone and grid interactive hybrid system. Then, the two system is compared to see the most economical one according to the net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE). The results revealed that the most optimal configuration of the two system is PV/grid hybrid system with 198 kW solar panel and the grid. it has NPC of $1.68M and COE of 0.176 $/kWh but not environmentally friendly when compared to the standalone hybrid system because of low renewable fraction. In this thesis, problems related to reliability, cost and environmental concerns of traditional energy sources are solved by using hybrid renewable energy system. The outputs of the thesis can assist stakeholders and policy makers in the growth of a standalone and grid interactive hybrid renewable system.
