Abstract (EN)

This study investigates the potential of Sedum plumbizincola, a promising plant specie, for phytoremediation purposes. The research focuses on the impact of organic amendments on the uptake of heavy metals and the accumulation of micro and macroelements by Sedum plumbizincola. Controlled experiments were conducted using soil samples collected from the vicinity of the Non-Ferrous Metals Work near Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The pot experiment followed a randomised complete block design, with five treatments and three replications (15 pots). The treatments included a control group without any organic amendments, as well as vermicompost and biochar amendments applied at rates of 5% and 10%, respectively, based on the weight of dry soil. The application of organic additives significantly influenced the soil's physicochemical characteristics. It led to increased concentrations of organic matter, electrical conductivity, and macroelements (P, K, Ca, and Mg) and microelements (Fe, Mn, Zn). Consequently, the presence of organic amendments affected Sedum plumbizincola's absorption of heavy metals and micro- and macroelements. The study also observed yield variations based on the type and quantity of the organic additive. Specifically, the variant with 10% vermicompost application produced Cd and Zn yields that were up to three times greater than the control sample. In contrast, the administration of 10% biochar had a negligible effect on crop yield. The results from this study highlight the significance of organic amendments for maximising the phytoremediation potential of Sedum plumbizincola. Organic additives can facilitate the uptake of heavy metals and essential elements by plants by enhancing soil properties and influencing nutrient availability. The results contribute to our understanding of sustainable strategies for employing Sedum plumbizincola in phytoremediation by emphasising the importance of selecting appropriate organic amendments and determining their optimal dosage in order to maximise plant performance and metal uptake efficiency.
