Seleucid queens

The Hellenistic Period commenced with the demise of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, leaving no heir to govern the vast empire that extended from Macedonia to India. It concluded with the passing of Cleopatra VII in 30 BC. Throughout this era, Alexander's generals established new kingdoms, which gradually weakened due to internal conflicts, rebellions, dynastic struggles, and ultimately the ascendance of Rome. These Hellenistic kingdoms governed the territories once conquered by Alexander until falling under Roman influence. Notably, queens emerged prominently within these kingdoms, largely due to political marriages. The Seleucid Kingdom was no exception, as Seleucid kings founded cities in honor of their wives or mothers. Many queens actively participated in public affairs and received accolades from cities, with some even having cults named after them. These influential queens played a significant role in the politics, wars, and rebellions of the period. Among the Seleucid queens, there were those who held power during the reigns of their husbands and sons, as well as those who governed the country on behalf of their sons or independently. To achieve this goal, various sources were utilized, including ancient texts, inscriptions, coins, and modern literature.
