Abstract (EN)
Introduction: Sepsis is a life-threatening infectious disease. There is no gold standard method for diagnosis of sepsis yet. In addition to the sepsis diagnostic markers in routine use, new inflammation markers are being studied in the diagnosis of sepsis. Our study aimed to investigate the role of raftlin, histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) and oxidative stress markers in the diagnosis of sepsis. Materials and Methods: In our study, 85 patients were included aged 18 and over who were hospitalized in the intensive care units and inpatient clinics of Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine Hospital between April 2023 and December 2023. There were 62 sepsis and septic shock diagnosed patients. Twenty-three patients without signs and symptoms of infection were included in the control group. Raftlin, HRG, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and total thiol levels were measured in the study and control groups. Results: The total of the 85 patients, 47.1% were female (n=40) and 52.9% were male (n=45). The mean age of the patients was 67.52 (±14.4) years. The mean raftlin level in sepsis patients (n=50) was significantly higher than the control group (n=23) (p=0.040). The mean HRG level of sepsis patients was significantly lower than the control group (p=0.006).There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of TAS and TOS (p=0.666, p=0.784, respectively). The mean total thiol levels of sepsis and septic shock patients (n=12) were significantly lower than the control group (p=0.023, p=0.035, respectively). The 28-day mortality rate was 91.7% (n=11) in septic shock patients, 56% (n=28) in sepsis patients and 8.7% (n=2) in the control group. Conclusion: Raftlin and HRG are new biomarkers that can be used as sepsis diagnostic markers. Beside diagnosis, raftlin and HRG can also be used in determining the prognosis with oxidative stress markers by consecutive measurements in sepsis patients. More studies including cost effectivity on biomarkers that may help in both diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis are needed.
