Investigation of antibacterial and antioxidant activity of the common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) plant

Abstract (EN)
In this study, antibacterial and antioxidant activity of common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) was investigated. For the studies, the roots, stem, leaves and seeds of the plant were boxed and ground, and then extracted using ethanol, methanol, acetone, hexane and chloroform solvents. Bacteria used in disc diffusion method for antibacterial study; Proteus vulgaris ATCC 13315, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis ATCC 911, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 700603, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212. For antioxidant study ABTS radical scavenging effect and phenolic content were examined. Total phenolic content and ABTS radical scavenging activity was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent in each extract. The results were compared with the standard items. Ethanol extracts for root, stem, leaf and seed extracts were effective against Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 bacteria as a result of disc diffusion method for antibacterial study, acetone extracts for seed and leaf were effective against Proteus vulgaris ATCC 13315, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 bacteria, methanol extracts for root, stem, leaf and seed extracts were effective against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 bacteria, it was found that chloroform extracts root, stem, leaf and seed extracts were effective against Yersinia pseudotuberculosis ATCC 911, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 700603 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 bacteria. The total phenolic content of the extracts showed that the total phenolic content of the extracts was in the range of akt 1,376 m eq/g as the gallic acid equivalent. The highest amounts were determined in methanol seed extracts. The results obtained from ABTS radical removal activity were found to be high in ethanol and methanol the extracts. Widely use of mullein (V. thapsus) in medicine and pharmacy shows the importance of this plant.
