The effect of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor drugs in reversal of cyproterone acetate related testicular injury in the EARLY period

Antiandrogens are used in the treatment of metastatic prostatic carcinoma.They are nowadays used for various indications and in younger age groups. The effects of antiandrogens on male sexual organs were investigated and cyproterone acetate was found to cause testicular injury. We aimed to investigate the effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors captopril and lisinopril on reversal of the injury. Nine groups, consisting 6 rats each, were used. Rats in groups 1, 2 and 3 were given cyproterone acetate plus saline for 3, 7 and 14 days. Rats in groups 4, 5 and 6 were given cyproterone acetate plus captopril for 3, 7 and 14 days. Rats in groups 7, 8 and 9 were given cyproterone acetate plus lisinopril for 3, 7 and 14 days. At the end of administration, the testicles were excised and examined. Cyproterone acetate caused histopathological detoriation in testes. Cyproterone acetate-induced testicular injury was found to be reversed at the third day in all groups. It was concluded that cyproterone acetate caused a reversible testicular injury which was observed to be similar in all groups (saline, captopril and lisinopril treated groups). However, captopril treatment was thought to prevent inflammatory reactions during the recovery period.
