Determination of depression, burnability and psychological resistance levels of the care of schizophrenia patients

Abstract (EN)
Aim: The most common psychologic disorders among people taking care of schizophrenia patients are Burnout Syndrome and Major Depressive Disorder. The aim of this study was to determine the depression, psychological resillience and burnout levels of schizophrenic caregivers who applied to a university hospital in Hatay and to search their relationship with various sociodemographic variables and to compare these variables with the control group. Methods: This cross-sectional study is performed in 2019 on caregivers of schizophrenia patients, above 18 years, who lives in Hatay. According to DSM-5, who applied to the psychiatry outpatient clinic of Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Hospital (HMKU) and included the criteria for inclusion, 80 people, consisting of 80 volunteers and healthy volunteers, were included in the study. The survey performed on participants is structured by researchers and consists of Sociodemographic datas (of patient, nurser and control group), Maslach Burnout Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and Psychological Hardiness Scale. With these data we evaluated psychological resillience, depression and burnout level. Mann Whitney U test Kruskal Wallis and Sperman Correlation Test are used and p<0,05. Results: PANSS score mean is 100,45±31,43, CGI score mean is 5,74±0,61 of participants. In study, Maslach Burnout Scale score is 60,56±9,67, Psychological Hardiness Scale score is 45,83±10,85, Beck Depression Inventory score is 14,60±7,54 in caregivers. In control group Psychological Hardiness Scale score is 48,09±11,23, Beck Depression Inventory score is 11,19±7,10. A meaningful relationship found between scales scores and PANSS, CGI, pyhsical comorbidity of caregivers, living with patient at the same house, verbal violence, age of caregivers, duration of illness and nursing, duration of hospital stay (p<0,05). Conclusion: Depression and burnout levels were found to be higher and psychological resillience levels were lower in the caregivers of schizophrenia patients than the control group. This situation is associated with some sociodemographic and clinical findings. If the prevelance is not determined and the required intervention is not done, important consequences will develop both for the patients and the caregivers.
