Abstract (EN)
This study examines the political thought of the Sophists and how Jean-Jacques Rousseau's political ideas, particularly in the context of the social contract, were influenced by them. The Sophists were thinkers known in the Greek period for their critical and relativistic approaches to knowledge, ethics, and politics. Their political thoughts generally emphasize the innate freedom of humans, prioritizing physis over nomos in the physis-nomos distinction and highlighting the significance of the social contract. This study argues that Rousseau's state of nature and social contract theory bear traces influenced by the Sophists. In Rousseau's theory of the social contract, the desire of individuals to regain the equality and freedoms they had in the state of nature stands out prominently. The emphasis Sophists placed on individual freedom is reflected in Rousseau's concept of the social contract. However, unlike the Sophists, Rousseau grounds his theory on natural law while advocating for a universal sense of justice and virtue. These differences and similarities help us understand how Rousseau was influenced by the Sophists and how he diverged from them. Rousseau's political thought, developed under the influence of the Sophists, offers a valuable perspective in terms of modern political theories. This study seeks to uncover the origins of Rousseau's ideas and his relationship with the Sophists, thereby opening new avenues for academic debate in the field.
