Development of a disaster education program in the context of social studies education

The best way to deal with disasters is a good disaster education. In order to get rid of the negative effects of disasters, it is necessary to raise individuals with disaster awareness from an early age. At this point, disaster education has important tasks in social studies education. This study, which aims to develop a disaster education program in the context of social studies education, was conducted with an embedded mixed pattern from mixed method research. A total of 14 different lesson plans were prepared for the prepared disaster education program, and the prepared lesson plans were applied to the students with a single group pre-test post-test experimental pattern by the social studies teacher during the course. During the research process, the data were obtained through the disaster education achievement test and semi-structured interviews. The study group of the research was 5th grade students who were educated at a public secondary school affiliated to the Ministry of National Education located in Ardahan province in the fall and spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year.the class consists of 25 students who take the social studies course and a Social studies teacher who conducts the application. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed by dependent groups t-test in intra-group analyses, while the qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis and presented in tables and figures. The data obtained showed that the disaster education program increases the achievements of the participating students, allows students to learn by having fun during the lesson process, and the materials and activities used during the lesson provide students with permanent learning through disaster education. Together with these results, suggestions have been made such as giving more practical trainings in this process so that students can internalize the disaster education process, conducting disaster education studies with family participation to make disaster education a part of society, and collaborating on disaster education with institutions and organizations located in our country.
