Abstract (EN)

As in all areas of social life, it is also possible to see the effect of the religious phenomenon in trade. This "state of being" plays a highly functional role in the formation of culture. A deterministic relationship occurs between religion and culture in this process, because the religious phenomenon affects culture; and it is also affected by culture. In the said process between religion and public life, the society is affected by a number of situations that are based on the religious and cultural foundations filtered from life or religious rituals; and as a result, these become visible in society as a lifestyle. The action of oath can be given as an example to this situation. It is a known fact that the oath phenomenon that has religious and cultural background has come into view in social relations, especially in trade relations. However, it is unclear whether the said oath used in trade makes sense or it has binding expression. This uncertainty has been the main problem of our research. In this study to begin with the conceptual framework of the thesis is formed. Following to that, interviews with acrobats in Igdir are made by using Max Weber's "causative" or "interpretive" (Hermeneutik) method, and this study is concluded by supporting these interviews with our observations in the field. According to the interview results, especially in trade relations, they often refer to sworn statements; the main motivations behind the oath are to convince the respondents and "habits" that push them to swear. During this research, the relativity aspect of social sciences has been taken into consideration as Edward Said stated: "(…) As severely and as rationally as I have been able, I have tried to maintain a critical consciousness, as well as employing those instruments of historical, humanistic and cultural research of which my education has made me the fortunate beneficiary." In the last part of our research, an assessment is made following to the interviews and their findings and we demonstrated efforts to make some suggestions. Key Words: Oath, Religious Oath, Non-religious Oath, Trade, Cambaz, Contract.
