The effect of arch geometry on structural behavior of the historical bridges

In this thesis, it is aimed to determine the arch width and arch height effects on the static and dynamic behaviors of the historical bridges with the finite element analyses. For this purpose, Göderni Bridge which is located in the southeastern region of Anatolia is selected as the application and investigation of the effects is aimed with making static and dynamic analyses on the finite element models which constituted on the ANSYS package. The thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, by mentioning the importance of the historical structures it has emphasized the necessity of protection of these structures. After that general studies about historical masonry arch bridges is given. In the last part of the section, required formulations are provided for the finite element method and dynamic analysis. Studies which are made within the thesis and findings of chosen bridge are taken place in the second part. After detailed information about chosen bridge were given, the results of dead load, dead and live loads, dead-live and earthquake loads analyses for changing arch thickness and arch height case are given with contour diagrams. Then all results are given in comparison with tables and graphs. In the third section, the results and suggestions which are obtained from study are listed. In the last chapter, it is given sources benefited and suggestions. At the end of the study, the effect of arches which are the main structural elements of historical masonry bridges, on the structural behavior of the bridges has been determined how and at what level and it is pointed out the necessity of the studies that will be made in this direction.
