The effect of collaboration on mitigating supply chain risks: A research on manufacturing companies

Supply chain risks has become one of the most significant topics in supply chain management literature due to the changes in world trade and economy. The most important question in risk managemen is what is risk? Generally, supply chain risks classified in three ways as: riks from outside of the supply chains, risks in suply chain but outside the focal firm and risks in the focal company. Supply chain risk management process consist of five steps: identification of the risks, risk assesment and evaluation, selection of appropriate risk management, implementation of supply chain risk management strategy and mitigation of supply chain risks. The scope of the appropriate risk management strategy is to find proper risk management techniques in order to eliminate the weaknesses of supply chain. From this point of view collaboration can be adressed as a proactive risk management and mitigation strategy. In this study, risk been defined as potential deviations from the expected supply chain outcomes and been undertaken with variance-based approach. In this respect supply chain risks been undertaken as in supply chain but outside the focal company at operational level namely; supply risks and demand risks. Supply chain collaboration can de classified in two ways based supply chain process namely; supplier collaboration and customer collaboration and associated with supply risks and demand risks. The main goal of this study is to demonstrate the direct affect of collaboration activities on mitigating the supply chain risks in Tukish manufacturing companies. In this context the surveys were conducted with the participation of the largest 1000 industrial enterprises determined annually by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ICO).
