The effects of technological advances on the labor market: A study on gender differences

As a result of technological developments accelerated by globalization movements, countries need to prioritize technological developments in order to adapt to the competitive environment in the global economy and to have a place in international markets. In order for countries to achieve sustainable development, besides technological developments, labor markets must also be effective. As a result of technological developments, while the competitiveness of countries increases, changes occur in the labor market at the same time. It has become a matter of curiosity how the developments in technology will affect the labor market. In line with the purpose of this study, the effects of technological developments on the labor market on the basis of gender will be examined. In this study, the effect of technological developments on the labor market on the basis of gender has been empirically examined. Panel data regression analysis method was used to examine this relationship. In the method used, G-20 countries were selected for the model and 13 countries and the European Union were included in the model due to the lack of data. Data sets between 2000 and 2020 were used in the models related to R&D expenditures. In the model made about R&D researchers, data sets between 2000 and 2018 were used. According to the findings, as a result of technological developments; there has been a decrease in the unemployment rates of women, men and all groups. As a result of the developments in technology, different results were obtained on the basis of gender in the labor force participation rate. While there has been an increase in the labor force participation rate of women with technology, there has been a decrease in the labor force participation rate of men.
