Investigation of effect of using sensemaking strategies on attude and academic succes in Turkish Language and Literature course

In this thesis research, the effects of sense-making strategies on students' academic attitudes and achievement in the 10th Grade Turkish Language and Literature course were examined. The research was carried out with a total of 50 students in a high school in the city center of Afyonkarahisar in the 2021-2022 academic year. The students were divided into two groups, 25 people in the control group and 25 people in the experimental group. Mixed research method was used in the research. In the quantitative dimension of the research, the "Attitude Scale Towards Turkish Literature" developed by Veyis (2015) and the academic achievement test developed by the researcher himself were applied. The qualitative dimension of the research was planned as an action research. Before the application, plans were prepared for the 10th grade Turkish Language and Literature course, poetry unit, covering a period of four weeks and interview form questions with students were prepared. During the implementation, teacher diaries, field notes and student diaries were kept. After the implementation, a semi-structured interview form was applied to the experimental group students. The data obtained from the quantitative dimension of the research were analyzed with quantitative data analysis methods. The data obtained from the qualitative dimension were analyzed using descriptive analysis and content analysis.. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the attitudes of the experimental group students towards the Turkish Language and Literature course were higher than before the implementation and higher than control group students. In addition, it was observed that the experimental group students were more successful academically than before the implementation and more successful academically than control groups. Students think that making sense strategies increase the speed of learning, facilitate new learning, and help them to make what they learn permanent. In addition, the techniques applied within the scope of the strategy had positive effects on students' interest, motivation, attitude and success.
