Turkey-United Kingdom commercial relations: Before and after Brexit

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to explain the commercial relations with the United Kingdom, which is one of the most important trade partners of Turkiye and also a country that has a foreign trade surplus, by separating it as pre and post Brexit.In order to understand the subject, first of all, the stages of economic integration, briefly the history of the European Union, the United Kingdom - European Union relations and the Brexit process are mentioned. In addition, the current Free Trade Agreements of Turkiye and the United Kingdom are also mentioned. The study also covers the service trade relations of the two countries. In the study, export, import and foreign trade data between Turkiye and the United Kingdom were examined with graphics. When comparing the trade data of the two countries after and before Brexit, 2021, the year when the Free Trade Agreement was signed, and 2019, the year in which Covid-19 did not start yet and Brexit did not occur, were taken as a basis. When the data is examined, from 2019 to 2021, it was observed that there was an increase in exports from Turkiye to the United Kingdom in most sectors and there was an increase of around 21% in total exports from Turkiye to the United Kingdom. At the same time, After Brexit, Turkiye's foreign trade surplus with the United Kingdom in 2021 reached the highest level compared to previous years.
