Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out to measure the levels of Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE) and Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) of Turkish learners of English studying at a state university in Turkiye. Finding out the relationship between these two widespread emotions and the primary sources behing these emotions were the other purposes of the study. In order to attain these goals, Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (FLES) and Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) were administered to discover the levels of these emotions and the link between them. Also, semi-structured interviews were held with both the instructors and the learners to discover the sources of these two emotions. A total number of 184 students took part in the first stage, and 12 learners and 8 volunteer instructors participated in the second stage. The study demonstrated that EFL learners studying at a tertiary level had a high level of enjoyment and a moderate level of anxiety. Besides, a weak-to-moderate relationship was found between these emotions. Regarding the sources of FLE, it was discovered that participants had enjoyment thanks to positive classroom atmosphere, positive teacher attitudes, enjoyable and novel activities, and self-realization of progress. With respect to FLA, the study uncovered that learners felt anxious due to not being capable of speaking English, fear of failure, test anxiety, fear of mispronunciation, scarcity of grammatical knowledge and failure to progress. The study offered some pedagogical implications in the end.
