Abstract (EN)

Conflicts between different ethnic groups have resulted in loss of countless lives, exposure to violence and displacement throughout history, as well as in the present day. Belief that someone's group is privileged and superior, while members of other groups are "others" is a primary cause of such conflicts. Bosnian War, which occurred between 1992 and 1995 and which the thesis studies as a case study, is one of such conflicts. While the literature contains studies on war memory and remembrance, this thesis specifically examines the question: "What are alternative ways to avoid forgetting collective atrocity in spatial experiences?" The objective of the research is to explore unconventional ways to not forget an ethnic conflict based massive losses. In thesis context the research, aims to analyze and understand victims with their war and post war experiences. In order to achieve that, memories, oral histories, and experiences are documented as gathered through face to face conversations, published sources, online sources, and museum materials. Additionally, the case site is visited by the author and everyday urban life and practices of people living in the context is observed and photographed. This thesis also questions effect of conventional memorials on not forgetting.
