Theological letters of Rabbula of Urhoy: Translation, examination and analysis

The fact that Rabbula was not as famous as the church fathers of his time may have created the impression that he was not of great importance for the history of the Church and theology in the East. However, this impression arises from the fact that the available historical sources do not provide a sufficient basis for a comprehensive evaluation of the Bishop of Urhoy. Theological letters, which are assumed to belong to Rabbula, include christological debates of his time and warnings about faith to clergies. In the context of christological discussions about Christ and Mary, Rabbula's letters are included within the framework of the questions asked about these issues and the criticism directed to him. Rabbula's references to both the old and new covenants in the letters we translated into Turkish are noteworthy. In the first part of our study, together with the Introduction, the life of Rabbula of Urhoy and the religious and political dynamics of the period are discussed. In the second part, a critical Turkish translation of Rabbula's Syriac letters with theological content that we selected has been completed. The third chapter includes the examination and analysis of the letters in question. Finally, our thesis has been concluded with conclusion, bibliography and appendices. First, the letter that Rabbula sent to Gemellina, Bishop of Parin, contains his warnings to the church structure and clergy about faith and belief. Secondly, the letter sent by Andreas of Samosat to Rabbula contains discussions about insults and excommunication. Finally, it deals with the thoughts of Cyrillos of Alexandria on the First Council of Ephesus, the heretical teachings of Nestorius and the ongoing christological debates.
