Conventi̇on metaphors about time in VIII-XIth century old Turkish texts

In the period from ancient times to the present day, studies have been carried out on the concept of time in many areas. Time; it has been the subject of study of many disciplines under the roof of social sciences such as philosophy, history of religions, sociology, anthropology and literature. However, it is an extremely complex concept that is emphasized by different disciplines that are far from social sciences, such as science, engineering and astronomy. The multi-layered nature of the concept has paved the way for interdisciplinary studies. For example, branches of science such as listening history-philosophy, literature-philosophy, literature-linguistics, philosophy-linguistics have evaluated the issue of time from various perspectives. We aimed to examine the place of this concept in the Turkish thought system based on the Old Turkish texts Bengü Taşlar and reveal its traces in Kutadgu Bilig through agreed metaphors. The first works covering the lives of the Turks, Bengü Taşlar and the most comprehensive philosophical work of the Turks, Kutadgu Bilig, were chosen as sources for our study because they are rich enough to discuss this concept in detail. Our study is essentially based on two main research topics. For this reason, before coming to the review part, detailed literature searches were made on the concepts of time and metaphor and the necessary information was classified. As a result of these classifications, the conceptual map of the thesis was revealed. Based on this, time metaphors have been identified in Bengü Taşlar and Kutadgu Bilig. Afterwards, the agreed upon metaphors about time were classified and examined. Under each metaphor, the connection between the concept of time and the examples given from the works is explained. It has been determined that many metaphors of time concepts in Bengü Taşlar are used with richer expressions in Kutadgu Bilig.
