Abstract (EN)

This thesis presents the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based implementation of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for a Visible Light Communication (VLC) System. This happens to be the Single-Input Single Output (SISO) Direct Current Biased Optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) version. The details of the transceiver and its parts are explained. VLC is a type of data communication that employs visible light from a light emitting diode (LED) as a short-range transmission technique. Communication occurs by modulating the optical signal, one such modulation technique is the DCO-OFDM employed in this thesis. Wang et. al. proposed a VLC system using a red LED, where DCO-OFDM is employed as the modulation technique. However, even though they show the basic structure of their implementation as a block diagram, little detail is given into how the communication occurs. The devices used and the area of the blocks are not provided, the structure of the OFDM frames are not explained. Fuada et. al. presents a System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture for OFDM for Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) in different studies. They give some details on their implementation and mention the devices they used. However, in their OFDM frame structure they do not have a Channel Estimation Training Sequence (CETS) to recover the signal from the noise added by a dispersive channel, and the spectral shaping occurs outside of the FPGA, whereas this thesis implements this within the FPGA. In this thesis, assuming the same methodologies that Wang et. al. used were used for the implementation, this implementation is 3.22x faster, and assuming the methodologies from the latter group were used, this implementation is 2.92x faster.
