Niğbolu Castle in the Ottoman-Russian Wars in the second half of the XVIIIth century

Abstract (EN)

Located on the Danube River, Niğbolu Castle has been in an important for every state that dominated the Danube River. After the domination of states such as Rome, Byzantium and the Bulgarian Kingdom, the Niğbolu Castle , which came under the rule of the Ottaman Empire and remained under Ottaman rule for a long period of 4 centuries, provided security, trade, transportation on the Danube River and provided the needs of the army in time of war. At the same time, Sofia and Niğbolu had a very important position in terms of providing transportation for the food collected from the Bulgarian geography and meeting the needs of Istanbul. In addition, Niğbolu Castle was one of the ways for the Ottoman Empire to establish dominance over Elak and to control Eflak. For this reason, it has always maintained its importance. Even as the Ottoman Empire expanded its borders, it maintained the military positions of the castle on the Danube River. In the wars that took place between 1593-1606, Niğbolu Castle was besieged by the Eflak voivode but could not be taken. Events such as the siege of Niğbolu Castle between 1593-1606 War, Niğbolu Castle was not besieged or attacked again. However, as a result of Russia's expansionist policies, during the 1768-1774 Ottaman-Russian War, Kulle Castle, which is constantly mentioned in the documents, was constantly attacked. After the 1768-1774 Ottamn-Russian War, in the 1787-1792 Ottaman-Austrian/Russian War, according to the treaty between Russia and Austria, Niğbolu Castle was one of the places left to Austria. After explaining the history of Niğbolu Castle, the subject of the study is shaped on Niğbolu Castle during the Ottaman-Russian Wa of 1768-1774 and the Ottoman-Austrian/Russian War of 1787-1792 and the repair of both Niğbolu Castle and Kulle Castle between 1768-1792. The study consists of three chapter. In the first chapter, information is given about the historical process from the entry of Niğbolu Castle into Ottoman rule until its exit from Ottoman terriorty. In the second chapter, informatio is given about the Niğbolu Castle and the Niğbolu pier in connection with the castle during the 1768-1774 Ottoman-Russian Wars and the 1787- 1792 Ottoman-Austrian/Russian Wars. In the third chapter, information is given about the repair processes of Niğbolu and Kulle Castles, the labor supply centers in the repairs, and the ammunition conditions of the castles.
