Structure and themes in Yaşar Nabi Nayir's theaters

This study aims to examine the structural and thematic elements in the theatrical works of Yaşar Nabi Nayır, one of the prominent authors of Republicanera Turkish literature. Nayır was among the most prolific literary figures of the period, producing works in various genres including poetry, short stories, novels, translations, and plays. Although he is more widely recognized in the public sphere for his role as a publisher, he also left a significant mark on the literary scene as a translator, writer, and poet. Nayır's contribution to literature extended beyond his own works; he also played a pivotal role in nurturing young writers, supporting them in their literary pursuits, and helping them gain a place in the literary world. Particularly noted for his realistic style, Nayır reflected the social, cultural, and structural dynamics of his time in his works. In this respect, his literary production can be seen as a kind of documentation, offering valuable insights into the spirit and mentality of the period. His theatrical texts, in particular, hold a special place in understanding the intellectual and cultural landscape of the era. In his plays, Nayır skillfully combines societal issues with individual introspections through a modern narrative language. By portraying the inner worlds of individuals and their conflicts with society, he delves deeply into the xii intellectual atmosphere of his time. In addition, through his high-quality translations, he introduced world literature to Turkish readers, thereby serving as a cultural bridge and familiarizing the Turkish audience with global literary developments. In this sense, he may be considered both a contributor to the development of national literature and a cultural ambassador enabling international literary interaction. This thesis aims to explore Yaşar Nabi Nayır's theatrical works in terms of structure and theme, thereby making visible the multifaceted nature of his literary legacy and contributing to future studies on Turkish theatre.
