Knowledge management in higher education institutions: A model proposal

Large amounts of data, information and knowledge are produced and used within the scope of education, scientific research and administrative activities of universities whose reason for existence is the creation and dissemination of knowledge. This situation, makes managing the knowledge assets and intellectual capital of universities an inevitable undertaking. In the knowledge age, where concepts such as knowledge society and knowledge economy have emerged, the enterprise knowledge management approach, which is related to e-governance, e-conversion and digitalization, has become a basic necessity for all organizations. In this direction, many studies in the literature have presented enterprise knowledge management models, which are known to be important tools in the implementation of this approach. On the other hand, knowledge management approach in higher education institutions attracts increasing attention in the literature. However, comprehensive knowledge management models that can be adopted by universities have not been produced so far. In this thesis, the enterprise knowledge management models in the literature were examined in terms of the process and infrastructure requirements of knowledge management in higher education institutions, and based on the appropriate model, by offering suggestions in line with the knowledge assets and intellectual capital management processes and missions of the universities, a comprehensive knowledge management model proposal was presented. It is thought that this model can be put into action in universities and will contribute to the literature.
