Gelecek için Fauxssiller: Plastik atık üzerine cyanotype dışavurumlar

This thesis focuses on the increasing plastic waste problem in the marine environment and it tries to create an artistic reflection with the Cyanotype photographic technique in order to create a body of work that highlights the relationship between found Plastic Objects and Cyanotype Photographs. The project conceptualizes the plastics as the fossils of the future since the material is highly durable and much resistant than the organic components in the marine environment. The conceptualization of these "fauxssilles" sounds like fossils, focuses on the plastics and photographic series being "faux"; meaning "fake" and "false". The Cyanotype as one of the earliest photographic techniques has been used for this series with a reference to the first photographic book by Anna Atkins, and this alternative photographic process has been selected as the Cyan - Prussian blue of Cyanotype technique has a reference to the marine environment and the chemistry (plasticity) of cyanotype prints are as durable as the content of the images of the plastics. The research focuses on the plastic waste problem and examines key artworks, in addition to the research on the theoretical framework in photography theory, focusing on permanence, memory and the evidence aspects of photography. The experimentation process uses photograms and the final implementation is a series of 14 photographs. The photographed objects were selected according to the Ocean Conservancy 2017 report, following the top 10 found item on ocean shores. Anima: Çok duyulu sanat yapıtı olarak bedensel terimlerdeki ortamlar

This thesis is a written translation of the project "Anima". It art historically, theoretically and technically reveals the thought and procedures behind the project. And it shows my path and stance as an artist and MFA student. Concerning the concept of Ocularcentrism, it is argued that the concept itself pales the art and the media and causes the disembodiments. In order to clarify the notion of disembodiment, a discussion on concepts of body and medium is exercised. Following this discussion, it is claimed that a new approach to the eye as a part of senses as an organized whole could bring a new way for media in bodily terms as a whole of the collaboration each medium used. Through this notion of art and media, art historical part clarified. And also the project is technically revealed by comparing and contrast with artists and artworks in case.

Muybridge-500: Bir dijital kullanma şekli olarak Jog-Shuttle

This thesis investigates the mode of operation of jog-shuttle as a dial in videotape editing technology and its way of operation. With the development of the technology, the upgrade culture turns the media devices into obsolete devices. Jog-shuttle as a physical dial which is found in the Bilkent Media Archaeology Lab is one of these devices. With the project, Muybridge-500 as an interactive installation, this thesis creates a rescue operation by transferring the mode of operation from analog to digital. This project by mimicking the device's mode of operation without using it's tactility, turns the jog-shuttle into a zombie media device. The recalling process saves the device from becoming obsolete and contributes to contemporary media by introducing a new mode of operation. The touchless operation by gestures of the new jog-shuttle is constructed with media archaeological gaze which demonstrates the non-linearity of the media. This knowledge transference takes again the analog device's operation as a bodily action and forms a new mode of operation which affects the decision making process during the interaction.

Film müziği ve çağdaş nostalji: Paul Thomas Anderson ve Jonny Greenwood işbirliği üzerine

Film scores in certain contemporary films which narrate stories from different time pe-riods display intriguing patterns in how they evoke distinct emotions and how they un-derscore the film's temporal and spatial configurations. This thesis investigates the role of the film score in Paul Thomas Anderson's recent four feature films such as There Will Be Blood (2007), The Master (2012), Inherent Vice (2014), and Phantom Thread (2017). By adopting Svetlana Boym's (2001) framework of nostalgia, this thesis aims to reveal how the film score accentuates the dialogue between historically significant individual and/or collective components of the time period depicted, and focuses on differences and similarities in evoking the past through the accompaniment of film score. Furthermore, since the original scores of these films have been composed by Jonny Greenwood, this study also adopts an auteurist approach towards the issue in order to reveal recurring patterns from the collaboration between the director and com-poser.

Dönüşüm halindeki bedenler: Weimar estetiğinde ontolojik olarak aradalık

This thesis examines the processes of bodily transformation in the Weimar aesthetics embarking on an eclectic philosophy. For this aim, it explores the artworks of Max Ernst, Heinrich Hoerle, Raoul Hausmann, Hannah Höch, Otto Dix, and George Grosz in terms of the liminal visualization of the human body in three central motifs that include the Volkskörper's (People's Body) philosophical, aesthetic, and political reflections. This term carries a crucial importance in this thesis to dismantle the subject from its social and individual body structures in which it exists. These artists' common traits arise from their searching for alternative forms in aesthetic, political, and social realms. The human bodies that are in constant change and transition in these artists' projects enable an analysis from an interdisciplinary angle, including Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's ontology of becoming, Rosi Braidotti's critical posthumanism, and Donna Haraway's theory of the cyborg. This integrative methodology demonstrates how the Weimar aesthetics that experience modernism embodies and accommodates different artistic modalities that explore human-machine relationships in various forms. Video oyun adaptasyonlarında yazarlık

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how authorship of video game adaptations is handled as a discursive concept. Auteur theory was created and analyzed as a critical method in the film medium. The thesis researches the adaptability and applicability of this theory into video games and video game adaptations. The findings from the literature review are then compared to a survey of players' perceptions and experiences of authorship in video gaming. The survey was conducted in four subtopics to examine player's opinions on their preferences in video games, transmedia and adaptation, game creators and creative roles, and lastly, impressions of authorship in video games and adaptations. Another angle on authorship in video game adaptations is the author-driven genre, with a case study of four different Lovecraftian video games; Conarium (2017) and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (2005) as direct and Bloodborne (2015) and Darkest Dungeon (2016) as heavily inspired video games inspired by the early 20th-century stories of H. P. Lovecraft. The chapter aims to analyze how literary authorship creates a genre and a brand of its own in video gaming. Lastly, the thesis analyzes transmedia storytelling with a case study of authorship in The Witcher franchise, in which the adapted video games have assumed a more prominent international position than their literary sources.

Vatandaş gazeteciliğinin yükselişi: Türkiye Twitter'ı üzerine içerik analizi

With the advancement of technology, increasing use of social media, and declining trust in mainstream media, which is dominated by moguls, as well as the Covid19 pandemic outbreak which has taken hold of the world, various journalism practices have undergone some changes. In this process, ordinary citizens have sought alternatives; the citizen journalism concept in digital media platforms has emerged and started to be used progressively. This thesis focuses on the Turkish Twittersphere and delves into the influences of citizen journalism, which has eventually led to mainstream media outlets' presence on the Twittersphere. Ordinary citizens engage in plentiful debates and discussions by contributing to overall interaction, whether active or passive. In that context, mixed content analysis is employed by retrieving data in four up-to-date categories, namely health, climate, economy, and Europeanization. Coding data according to engagement rate and several other categories, the findings of this study reveal that citizen journalism is on the up and has gained the trust of other users in the Turkish Twittersphere compared to prominent traditional media outlets. Thus, in addition to highlighting why citizen journalism has emerged and gained prominence to such a degree, this thesis also demonstrates the declining credibility of mainstream media and its reflections. Keywords: citizen journalism, mainstream media, propaganda model, Turkey, Twitter

Transıer: Mekan, hareket, ve geçicilik

Transier is both the title of a growing series of interactive kinetic sculptures made of recycled plastic strips and electro-mechanical components aka. specimens, and their defined framework. These specimens are taking the source of their movement from their viewer regarded as the passer-by. They aim to disrupt their transient state as they pass-by and affect their consciousness with their being. This dynamic as the interaction between the specimen and its viewer is integral to both this artwork and this research while the nature of being is investigated. Taking the first two specimens of Transier consisting my current thesis project as its considered body of work, this thesis aims to provide an in-depth theoretical exploration within the complex web of relations between space, movement, being, and materiality with a particular existential emphasis on transience within the context of my artistic practice. Throughout this theoretical exploration, an inherent interconnectedness between the notions of space, movement, and being is revealed and emphasized; an existential philosophical standpoint where a dynamic, ever-changing nature of being that is related to a constant state of flux is established; and eventually the transience of being is argued.

Socrates Dergi ve Yazıhane Blogu üzerinden Türkiye'deki alternatif spor basını incelemesi

Especially in the last century, sports extended its scope and began to be followed by wider audience. Enhancements in the fields of communication and broadcasting enabled people to be more engaged and knowledgeable on sports than ever before. As a joint result of the expansion of sports and engagement of the audience, media increased its coverage on sports related content. While producing content regarding sports, the main focus was on the factual information from the competitions, simple statistics and relatively superficial commentary for the mainstream media. However, this approach of mainstream media caused some particular topics and branches to remain uncovered. Moreover, mainstream media has been working in line with existing dominant structures, seeking for profit, paying more attention to quantity than quality and limiting the scope of the authors with editorial interventions. These conditions paved the way for a pursuit of alternative approach within sports media. Intention was to produce sports related content which aims to fill the gaps left by mainstream media, by taking a stance against the dominant economic structure and creating a more horizontal relationship both among the authors and with the audience. Within this context, focus of this study will be the alternative sports media in Turkey. Through the overall analysis of the literature, features of the alternative media will be pointed out. By utilizing the core principles of the alternative media, two case studies Socrates Magazine and Yazıhane Blog will be analyzed. Main aim of the study will be to assess the compliance and extent of the alternative media examples in Turkey with the features underlined in the literature. Keywords: Alternative, Media, Socrates, Sports, Yazıhane.

Türk ve Amerikan animasyonlarına ekofeminist bir yaklaşım

This thesis aims to analyze and compare four Turkish and four American animations from an ecofeminist perspective. The selected animations from Turkey are Kral Şakir Cumburlop (2021), Pırıl (2019-), Rafadan Tayfa 2: Göbeklitepe (2019), Kötü Kedi Şerafettin (2016) while the animations from the US are Frozen (2013), Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-2020), Invincible (2021-). Each selected animation is given an age range for the purposes of this research and these ranges indicate which animation pair is compared in terms of ecofeminism concepts. Close reading method is conducted to each animated work with the help of the Bechdel Test as well as the Maisy Test. Regardless of its location or which platform it gets aired, animations have been an important part of people's entertainment. A concept as relevant and needed as ecofeminism should be researched within animation and its' related concepts in order to show animation audiences the feminist and ecologically positive world views.
