Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was investigate the effects of teaching materials prepared according to the REACT strategy of context based learning approach on12th grade students' conceptual changeon the subject of hydrocarbons (alkane, alkene and alkyne) in organic compounds unit. The study was carried out within a pretest-posttest-delayedtest designsimple-experimental method and was conductedwith 2012th grade students, studying Fatih Anatolian High Schoolin Gölköy-Ordu city. The applications were carried out by using worksheets developed according to the REACT strategy of context based learning approach. In the study, the data were gathered by using Hydrocarbons Concept Test (HCT) and semi-structured interviews about concepts and applications. The statistical analysis of the data gathered from HCT shows that there is a meaningful difference between the students' scores of pretest and posttest (F(2-57)=19,11, p<0,05) in favor of the post-test. In other words, the lessons conducted by the context based learning approach caused a meaningful increase in students' posttest results when compared to their pretest. It was seen that the results of delayed test applied to learn how much permanent the applied applications were, created a meaningful difference compared to pretest (F(2-59)=19,110, p<0,05), while it was seen that there was not a meaningful difference between the scores of posttest and delayed test (p>0,05). It was concluded that the materials developed according to the REACT strategy of context based learning approachin the study were effective in students' making conceptual change in a positive way by removing alternative concepts in handled subjects. Also, it was concluded that the teaching materials stored ''hydrocarbons'' concepts in long term memoryand the applicability of developed materials were high. It was recommended that the effectiveness of REACT strategy be studied in different subjects and branches. Key Words: Hydrocarbons (Alkane, Alkene, Alkyne), Context Based Learning Approach, REACT Strategy, Alternative Concept, Conceptual Change.
