Abstract (EN)

The Ottoman Empire is a great world state. Therefore, the state had to conduct some censuses for the lands, products and animals in its possession. These censuses were first started with the Tahrir Books and then recorded in the Avarız and Temettuat Books. In the beginning, the need to determine the population to be conscripted to the army and the taxes led to the formation of Population Books with the census of only the male population. However, counting only the male population does not make it possible to reach definitive conclusions about the people in that region. In 1831, during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, the first census in the modern sense was organized. With the censuses carried out in this context, it was possible to reach more detailed information.
