Etymological changes in Turkish counterparts of French words since 1840's

Interaction between languages is a fact that can be traced throughout history. E.g. Chinese effect on Turkish language can be seen in Orkhon Inscriptions, which are of first written sources of Turkish. Because of the fact that Turks has lived with various civilizations, Turkish language both influenced and was influenced by their languages. Turkish language was influenced by Sogdian and Chinese, then, after Turks began to be Islamised, Turkish language was influenced by Arabic and Persian languages. Interaction between Turkish and Western languages dates back to times when Turks began to settle in Anatolia. In the beginning, Turkish language was influenced by Greek and Armenian languages. After that, due to maritime activities, language of Turks began to be influenced by Italian. After Western world grew stronger and dominated most of the world by means of civil, military, economical and scientifical revolutions; along with Russian and other languages on the world, Turkish began to be influenced by French. In this paper, French effect on Turkish language since 1840's was studied. This was done by analyzing dictionary items in three dictionaries if they include the French headword. It was found out that Turkish language was influenced by French mostly after formation of Republican government, more than Tanzimat Period. It was also identified that some of French words replaced old cognates in Turkish.
