6th grade students opinions and encountered difficulties in project and performance tasks

This research aims to express encountered difficulties and views of 6th grade pupils about Maths project and performance works.In the research, mixed methods approach is carried out by using survey and special case study methods. The questionnaire, that is formed by two sections, is applied in 240 pupils at 6th grade at primary schools in Trabzon in 2011-2012 academic year. 222 questionnaires are evaluated. Afterward, observation method is carried out with 21 pupils who study at 6th grade at Tonya 17 Subat primary school.At the end of this application, special case study method is carried out with 6 pupils ,that are chosen from 21 pupils, by using interview method. In the research, determining of pupils? view questionnaire, that is developed by researcher on her own, half- structured interview and intra class observation forms are used as a data collection tool. In quantitative data analysis, frequency, percent, arithmetic mean and standard deviation calculations are done by using SPSS (version 15.0) packaged software. In qualitative data analysis, coding based on content analysis and direct citations are used.At the end of the research, it is determined that students mostly have idea about practicing the project and performance work but they don?t recognize what they gain from them. Also, in questionnaires, that are applied, pupils? views of performing the elements in project and performance works have been in high level. However, it is found out that in interviews and observations, there is bother about group work because of the studies aren?t carried out it as it is required and only some of the pupils can have a chance to join the study. Specially, it is stated that they are unconscious about making research from sources, they generally use internet for researches and using internet become a habit for them.Key Words: Mathematics lesson, Project task, Performance task
