Health services and medical developments in the Abbasilar period

It is not possible to say anything about exactly when medical activities started. The science of medicine emerged because of the need of people to find solutions to their health problems. Hz. In the time of the Prophet, medicine was tried to be developed by utilizing the medical knowledge of both Arabs and other civilizations. During the Umayyad period, Muslims encountered different information about medicine with the translation activities that emerged. They made this information more permanent by making it a book. During the Abbasid period, important developments took place in the medical sense. The factors that contributed to this development were the translation activities, the physicians of the Jundishapur medical school coming to Baghdad, the Abbasid caliphs supporting medical activities and calling important doctors to their palaces, the salaries paid to these doctors, some practices for arranging medical services and the contribution of the Abbasid caliphs to the establishment of the hospital. In addition to these, we can count the philanthropic people who participated in the efforts to establish a hospital at that time by providing financial income. The details of all these developments are included in the study. During the Abbasid period, the developments in medicine started mostly with the Buhtîşû family. This family came to Baghdad and contributed to the development of medical science in the Abbasids. During the Abbasid period, the number of physicians and the number of hospitals increased. During the Abbasid period, medical science developed and branches of medicine such as pharmacy emerged, thanks to both medical education and translations. With the emergence of pharmacy, the Abbasids also developed in medicine. As a result, the science of medicine has passed through various stages until the Abbasid period and has lived its golden age and formed the foundations of today's medical science.
