Radial compressors equipped with vaned diffusers are widely used in industry. Vaned diffusers ensure higher pressure recovery compared to the vaneless diffusers. Specifically, the leading-edge shape of the vanes has large impact on the performance of the compressor. In this study the vaned diffuser geometry of a single radial compressor geometry is optimized using the discrete adjoint optimization technique. The optimization study was carried out with the open-source computational fluid dynamics software SU2 (Stanford University Unstructured). First, the optimization is performed for a single operating point of the compressor that is close to the choking conditions. Even though the optimized vane geometry performed considerably better at the choking conditions, the dramatic drop in the compressor performance at the operating point with the best efficiency showed the ineffectiveness of the optimization study focused only on a single operating point. Next, the optimization study was repeated using a multi-point optimization technique where the flow behavior at the two ends of the operating curve, one at the best efficiency point and the other close to the choking conditions, is considered. The study resulted in a performance increase along the whole operating range of the compressor where the rise in the compressor efficiency reached to about 2 % close to the choking conditions.
