Economical and social result of the eartquake in Adana-Ceyhan (on june 27 th, 1998)

The economical and social results of the earthquake which occured in the region of Adana-Ceyhan (June 27 th, 1998) is the subject of the study that we present as a postgraduate thesis.The research area taking part in Adana region of Mediterranean Region, Niğde in the North, Osmaniye in the East and Silifke in the West, takes up approximately 3000 km2 of land.In the research area which exposed to the earthquakes in various dates and in close environments, seventy-five earthquakes happened in the years between 1900 and 1983, all of which resulted in life and property lost. Except for these earthquakes, Adana-Ceyhan Earthquake is the one which occured at 16.55 on June 27 th, 1998, caused 145 death, 1500 injured and damaged 22.396 residences and offices.This earthquake, of which magnitude was 6.3 and destroying effect was rather high, resulted in a great amount of death and property lost for the families in this region. Regarded that issue, the economical and social results of Adana-Ceyhan Earthquake were studied in three sections.The first section is considered as an introduction. In this section; earthquake, its varieties, causes, parameters and the seismicity of Turkey were tried to explain generally.In the second section, the economical results of the earthquake were studied. The subject was researched under the titles of physical and local damages, rescue after eartquake and immediate support services, disaster management, social aids, economical documantation of the earthquake and damage assessment efforts during and after the earthquake. In these researches, the economic lost of the families during and after the earthquake, government aid to the families and economical burdens on the families and government were tried to find out.As to the third section of our research; we studied, on the deaths and injuries occur in the earthquake, and social dimensions and psychological conclusion of the earthquake which consist of the social outcomes of the study. Except for the visible effects of the earthquake, the experiences of the people as a social creature, social tissue of the region, population quality and people?s point of view towards earthquake as one of the most destructive disasters were tried to find out. Furthermore ın this sections, psychological problems, permanent and and temporary effects of eartquake on people were studied.The studies regarding economical and social results of Adana-Ceyhan Earthquake were tried to explain in a wide perspective. Later, the suggestions of solutions which are essential to minimize the death rate and property lost resulted from the earthquake, which might occur in the future, were presented in our study.Key Words: Earthquake, economical result, social result.
