Abstract (EN)

Forensic entomology is a field of study that employs scientific research on the biology and behaviour of insects in forensic investigations. Throughout history, there are numerous examples of the role of insects in determining the time of death and in criminal investigations. Research in this field has led to significant advances in estimating the time elapsed after death, examining whether there is any change in the position of the body, and estimating the cause of death. The present study aimed to analyse the level of knowledge, perspective, self-efficacy and perceptions of forensic entomology among personnel of the Gendarmerie General Command Criminal Investigation Department. The results of the survey indicated that the participants believed that the application of forensic entomology would be beneficial in their work, with 66.9% of respondents indicating that it would be useful, 65.7% stating that it would enhance their productivity, and 64.3% suggesting that it would improve their efficiency. There is a perception among participants that learning and using entomological techniques is relatively straightforward (63% and 58.2%, respectively). Furthermore, there is a consensus among participants that sharing and interacting about entomological topics is an important aspect of the field (54%). Nevertheless, the participants exhibited uncertainty regarding the performance and utilisation of forensic entomology, with 32.5% and 31.8% respectively expressing reservations. Nevertheless, the results indicate that the investigative teams at the scene of the crime have a positive attitude towards forensic entomology and are willing to use it in their work. The results indicate that there are deficiencies in the application of forensic entomology, and that the training of law enforcement personnel in this field should be enhanced, with a particular focus on those with experience. The proposal includes suggestions for increasing personnel numbers, standardising forensic entomology procedures, and fostering inter-institutional collaboration.
