Bülent ALANERWith the foundation of Turkish Republic, an era of modernization had begun forTurkey. Atatürk laid great emphasis on Turkey as a country, which is a part of the modernworld. Therefore, education and the arts became an important part of his priorities. Atatürk?saim was to achieve an international outlook in music, which is at the same time national. Thiswas also one of Ahmed Adnan Saygun?s main principles.Ahmed Adnan Saygun is an important figure in Turkish musical history as acomposer, a researcher and an instructor. This dissertation study is mainly concerned withAhmed Adnan Saygun?s personality as an artist besides his personality as a composer,researcher and an instructor and also his works. The development of musical education inTurkey from Ahmed Adnan Saygun?s point of view is also studied in this dissertation study.Ahmed Adnan Saygun wrote the Opera ?Özsoy?, the Ballet ?Bir Orman Masalı-AForest Tale? and the Oratorio ?Yunus Emre ? creating the first examples of these genres inTurkey.
