Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of interactive reading education provided to families on the reading comprehension skills of 6th grade middle school students and to identify families' views on interactive reading education. Although studies on interactive reading in our country have increased compared to previous years, there are still a limited number of studies available. Most of the studies conducted have focused on preschool and primary school children. When the studies conducted in our country are examined, it is seen that interactive reading education has not been provided to families. The fact that this study will be conducted by providing interactive reading education to the families of middle school students for the first time makes it unique. This research used a mixed method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. In the quantitative dimension of the research, a pre-test-post-test control group quasi-experimental design was used to determine the effect of the interactive reading method on students' reading comprehension skills. Since a quasi-experimental design was used in the study, no population or sample was selected; instead, the focus was on the equality of the study groups. In the qualitative dimension of the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the families participating in the application. The study consists of 6th grade female and male students attending two project classes at an imam hatip middle school. There are 13 female students in the control group and 13 male students in the experimental group. The interactive reading education provided to families was carried out with a group of 13 mothers of male students in the experimental group. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with mothers who received reading education. No intervention was made with the female students in the control group, and they continued their lessons in accordance with the Turkish Education Program. The Reading Comprehension Test was used as the measurement tool in the study, and the Semi-Structured Interview Form was recorded and applied for the interviews. At the end of the study, it was determined that there was a difference in favor of the post-test between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group students, while there was no difference in favor of the post-test between the pre-test and post-test scores of the control group students. In the interviews conducted with the mothers who participated in the parent education program, it was observed that they reported completely positive views about the education process and found the application useful.
