Real-time home energy management application and harmonic mitigation in smart grids

Abstract (EN)

In this study, harmonic measurements of 26 appliances in a four-person household in Trabzon are analysed. According to IEEE 519 and IEC 61000 standards, the need to control harmonic pollution caused by nonlinear loads driven by alternative current sources in residential distribution grids is emphasised. It is shown that power quality can be improved in the smart grid concept by using demand side management (DSM) strategies. In the study, active power, active energy and harmonic values of the appliances are obtained with 1 second resolution measurements. Load shifting strategies for energy management are developed using DPSO and DTLBO optimisation methods. These strategies are analysed to meet the power quality requirements. Measurements taken in real time for 24 hours with 1 second resolution showed that load shifting methods both smooth the load curve and reduce billing costs. The study revealed that DSM strategies are effective in reducing harmonic distortion in real-world scenarios and can ensure compliance with IEEE standards. These findings highlight the potential benefits of DSM methods to reduce energy costs and improve system efficiency.
