Smartphone addiction and psychosocial factors in high school students in alaca district center

In this study, it was aimed to determine smart phone addiction and psycho-social problems among secondary school students in Alaca District of Çorum. This cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2018-June 2019. The study included 655 students under the age of 18 years. In the questionnaire, a socio-demographic characteristics information form, Smartphone Addiction-Short Form Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and Depression Scale were used. Ethics Committee approval was obtained from Hitit University for the research. The data were evaluated by using SPSS 21.0 program with independent t-test, One-Way Anova (Post-hoc Tukey), Chi-square test and Pearson Correlation analysis.In analysis, p<0,05 value was considered statistically significant. In the study group 58% were male and 42% were female with the mean age 15.7±1.2 years. In the study group smartphone addiction risk was 41.8%, 44.3%, 40.3% in all group, female and male students respectively. (p>0,05). The age groups of the students were found to be effective on depression scores (p<0,05). Smartphone addiction risk was significantly higher in terms of smoking, fast-food consumption and skipping meals, (p<0,05). The appearance of the phone and the amount of time spending on the internet, the frequency of daily control of smartphone and the time spending with smartphone were effective on increased smartphone addiction risk (p<0,05). Smartphone addiction risk and self-esteem were significantly higher among students with vision problems (p<0,05). Negative family relationships, repressive family attitudes, poor teacher-student relationship and low academic achievement had an increasing effect on smartphone addiction (p<0,05). The rate of those who have problems with their family was 31.5% and among those smartphone addiction risk and self-esteem were significantly higher (p<0,05). The rate of those who considered themselves as smartphone addiction was 16.2% and among those smartphone addiction risk and self-esteem were higher. It was found that there was a siginificant correlation between smartphone addiction, frequency of controlling the smartphone, the duration of taking care of the smart phone, the duration of daily internet time and self-esteem (p<0,05). In this study, smartphone addiction risk was high among secondary school students and it was increased by psychosocial factors.
