Abstract (EN)
The journey of agricultural products from farm to fork is very important for ensuring the wellbeing of the people. Utilization of inefficient transportation modes and inefficient logistics systems can cause significant price hikes between the producer and the consumer which can jeopardize the food affordability and security. To address these issues, increasing the share of efficient and environmentally transportation modes, and designing innovative logistics strategy concepts are necessary. However, these tasks can be particularly challenging for countries with limited resources. Therefore, consideration of real-life constraints while designing these innovative concepts is essential. One of the most recent innovative logistics planning concept is called synchromodality which is a planning approach that aims to optimize the logistics operations and providing economic, environmental and sustainability benefits. This is achieved through searching for the optimum transportation route using real-time data that is being provided by all stakeholders of the logistics network. However, when discussed with logistics sector experts, the concept is often considered as vague and very difficult to implement in practice. In this dissertation, a new definition for the concept of synchromodality is presented and a model has been proposed based on this new definition. The proposed model that utilizes trucks for short distance trips and freight trains for long distance trips, is tested in an open-source simulation environment. 2 baseline and 4 proposed model alternatives are tested across a total of 792 scenarios. According to the results, the proposed model can reduce the fuel consumption levels significantly but comes with a trade-off in transportation duration. The new definition for the synchromodality is validated through the results of this use-case study and interviews with logistics experts.
