Abstract (EN)

Natural resources have long been a focal point as a valuable source of bioactive compounds for humanity. Plants, in particular, hold significant potential for health due to their diverse array of bioactive compounds. This study is conducted with the purpose of determining the phenolic acid and flavonoid contents in Allium yesilyurtense (Yeşilyurt Onion) and Allium adiyamanense (Adıyaman Onion) plants, as well as comprehending their biological activities. The fundamental aim of this thesis is to extensively examine the chemical compositions of Yeşilyurt Onion and Adıyaman Onion plants, thereby determining the quantities of phenolic acids and flavonoids they contain. Additionally, various biological tests will be utilized to evaluate the biological activities of the plant extracts. This study strives to reveal the potential of deriving new bioactive compounds from natural sources by elucidating the chemical compositions and biological potentials of these plants. The significance of this research lies in the comprehensive characterization of chemical compositions in these endemic plant species and understanding their potential health benefits. Compounds like phenolic acids and flavonoids are associated with diverse biological activities such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antimicrobial effects. By shedding light on how these compounds within plants can contribute to health benefits, this study can contribute to the development of novel approaches in the medical and health domains. In terms of its originality, this study presents a unique approach by examining the biological activities of bioactive compounds derived from Turkey's local plant species rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids. The obtained outcomes can aid in comprehending the chemical compositions and biological impacts of these plants, potentially facilitating the development of future health products and medications. The theoretical approach encompasses understanding the fundamental properties and biological effects of phenolic acids and flavonoids present in plants. This approach can assist in scrutinizing the biological activities of plants on a molecular level. Among the methods employed in this study, the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method stands out. HPLC is a potent technique capable of high-resolution separation and analysis of compounds. Through the application of the HPLC method, detailed analysis of phenolic acids and flavonoids within plant extracts can be accomplished. In conclusion, this study aims to determine the phenolic acid and flavonoid contents of Yeşilyurt Onion and Adıyaman Onion plants and comprehend their potential biological activities. The findings of this study have the potential to contribute to the evaluation of the utilization of novel compounds from natural sources in the realm of health. Overall, this study endeavors to ascertain the chemical composition of Allium yesilyurtense and Allium adiyamanense plants, and to understand their potential biological activities. The acquired findings may bolster the potential utilization of these plants in the field of health.
